Did you know there were Muggles who figured out how to raise cathedrals not only without magic, but without mortar? Arches that hold themselves up. Gravity's one of the laws of physics even the greatest wizards must still struggle with, but these chaps were giving it a gleeful two fingers hundreds of years ago. Fucking grand.
I think there's more of this sort of ingenuity at use in Hogwarts than you'd think. A lot of the vaulting has integrity without requiring the application of magic, and the main staircases bear a strong resemblance to the mortar-free constructions you see in Muggle French architecture of the same period.
Now I'm really curious about the charms on the moving staircases. How much trouble do you think I'd get in if I accidentally dismantled one?
[7th year Claws] Let's build a fort out of books. And parchment. That might work best for the roof, though I'm having my doubts about its defensive integrity. Then again, we do have extra-natural strengthening measures at our disposal.
